10.9 users reminder

Postby nodarkthings » Thu Jan 16, 2025 1:58 am

For anyone using OpenZFS v2 on 10.9 (Mavericks), here's a reminder for things to check, if you have an "incompatible disk" warning and if automount doesn't work:

    • zfs.fs has to be in /System/Library/Filesystems instead of /Library/Filesystems to avoid the "incompatible disk" warning
    • Edit the file /usr/local/zfs/libexec/zfs/launchd.d/zpool-import-all.sh and replace
    Code: Select all
    /bin/launchctl kickstart -kp system/org.openzfsonosx.zpool-import
    with
    Code: Select all
    /usr/local/zfs/bin/zpool import -a -f
    for automount to work

Just tested v2.3.0 and you still have to make those modifications manually — I use the root user in the Finder.
All seems ok. ;)

EDIT 11/2025: I've tried to install v2.1.0 instead and the kext isn't even loaded! So the situation for me is v2.1.0 on 10.14 (because it's way faster) and v2.3.0 on 10.9 (because it's the best v2 now that I have upgraded my pools — otherwise, I'd stick to v1.9.2 for that OS version). There's one good reason for upgrading pools to v2, though, for it has a few interesting features, namely zstd compression (I use zstd-9 for virtual machines and zstd-3 for the rest) and recordsize that goes up to 8M in recent versions (1M in v2.1.0). So, for compatibility between 10.9 and 10.14, I won't upgrade my pools past v2.1.0.
