Looking for testers of 1.8.0

Postby lundman » Thu Oct 04, 2018 4:03 pm

I'm new to producing the installer packages, but I have done so for 1.8.0. But I do not have all the OSX version VMs readily available (I'll get them sorted over the next few days)

Meanwhile, if people are willing to test the release, I have made it available here.

* Checking that it installs as expected, and that basic usage is working.
* I had some issues with zed not installing 'config.rename.sh', so /etc/zfs/zpool.cache.tmp was not renamed, but I believe that fixed.
* If InvariantDisks does not start from launchctl, it may report no pools and you need "zpool import -d /dev" to see them, but better is to start InvariantDisks.
(sudo launchctl load /Library/LaunchDaemons/org.openzfsonosx.InvariantDisks.plist) or just reboot after install

So far I have installed it on
Code: Select all
10.14 Mojave : NG - can deadlock booting, wait for fix
10.13 High Sierra: OK
10.12 Sierra: OK
10.11 El Capitan: NG - invalid certificate?
10.10 Yosemite: ?
10.9 Mavericks: OK
10.8 Mountain Lion: ?

UPDATED: the problem is now solved.

I have downloaded 1.8.0.
It installed without issues on High Sierra.

I could import my pool with:
Code: Select all
sudo zpool import poolname

Then I typed sudo zpool list, and the pool is listed as ONLINE.

However, it doesn't show in the Finder.

What might be the cause?

UPDATE

I used the script to remove OpenZFS from my High Sierra system, then I ran the installer again, and it works.

I am getting an endless boot/crash loop as soon as I install.

I'll get more information about the issue and post here later today.

I tried setting my configuration to get symbols but that seems to be blocked. Please tell me how I can get useful information to you.

My computer is Mac Pro (Mid 2010) with a 3.46 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon. I am running High Sierra 10.13.6 with a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 TI 6144 MB graphics card with NVIDIA Drive 387.10.10.10.40.105.

ZFS has run perfectly on my computers for years. I switched my graphics card yesterday to this NVIDIA card. Now when the card is active, ZFS triggers a kernel panic. The panic occurred with releases < 1.8.0 after boot and during the phase when ZFS was importing/mounting my pool. With 1.8.0 my computer panics as soon as it boots.

What information can I gather for you?

Have a look in /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/ and see if you get any panic reports.

I have installed 1.80 successfully on two Macs, both on High Sierra 10.3.6, with the previous 1.7.4 beta running prior to installation. The install isn't elegant, in the sense that it errors on first attempt, but a reboot and retry allows the install to complete. I think this is most likely an installer script issue, rather than anything to do with zfs itself.

I saw that as well, upgrading with Git instead of using the binary installer, since I was previously running on a hand-built version.

I chalked it up to the prior problems I'd had with this pool, so since I'd been looking for an excuse to rebuild this pool anyway, did that.

However, before I gave up and started restoring this pool from backup (still in progress!) I enabled crash reporting, so I'm attaching the only panic report I can find. I hope it's useful.

If you have more than one pool, you can try starting the system with all ZFS drives disconnected, then turn them on one pool at a time, then import one pool at a time. You might find, as I did, that only one of your pools has problems.

OK - I have my general ZFS configuration working. I was due to a problem with a pool on three internal SSD drives. Not sure what went wrong with them.

I'm back with the release just prior to this 1.8.0 beta release.

I installed the 1.8.0 beta release and it could not locate nor import my existing pools. Very strange. I reverted to the backup of my boot disk and the pools were loaded properly and work just fine. Something strange with my computer right now.

@tangent:
PANIC: zfs: allocating allocated
seems to be something the ZOL guys have seen in pool corruption: https://github.com/zfsonlinux/zfs/issues/6976

randolph.kahle:

Most likely InvariantDisk didn't start, and it no longer looks in /dev/ automatically

Has anyone else seen this in the DMG?

It might be due to this machine being a 5K iMac, hence roughly twice as many pixels per unit area as a normal monitor of the same size. If the icon coordinates were stored absolutely, it might explain the problem. Maybe next time build the DMG with the Finder settings set to align the icons to a grid?
