The best choice is the HighPoint RocketRaid 2722 if you want SF-8088 external connections, or its twin the RockdetRaid 2720SGL for SF-8087 internal setup. Both cards are made by LSI but sold by HighPoint and are essentially plug-n-play. They are excellent choices for HBA non-raid configurations with OpenZFS on hackintoshes: I have at least 7 of them in various machines. There are numerous other users in hackintoshland who will attest to their value and robustness as well. They have worked flawlessly for me with OSXZFS to date.

Don't pay full retail price; if you are patient the 2722s frequently drop to $170 or so on Amazon for a new card; 'refurbs' from Amazon Warehouse Deals sometimes go for $100-125. There is also a San Digital-branded variant (San Digital 2-Port Mini-SAS PCI-E PCIe x8 2.0 SAS/SATA 6G RAID Controller (RR2722)) that is identical to the Highpoint card that I once snagged for $75 from Warehouse Deals, so look for those as well.

Note: do not purchase the plain "Rocket" cards that look identical: they will not work as HBAs on hacks.

I use the RocketRAID 2744 in a X58 Hack running 10.10.5.

no dramas here and have plenty of port-expansion and/or speed when I move to SSDs one day ;)

I'm glad to hear some positive experiences with the HighPoint card — I had one of their USB 3 cards and it was really rickety and relied on a daemon it ran to handle configuration of the device which really bothered me for some reason. I had completely written them off until your post(s).

there is a local host daemon that runs via a kext on a port number.

I only ever use it to identify the SN of a failed drive and swap it out on the fly.

it will even alarm on a failed jbod which is nice.

100% recommended for me...

I also use the following HBA in a backup Hacintosh which is cheap and has 10 SATA3 ports.

http://www.addonics.com/products/ad10sa6gpx2.php

It's a very simply JBOD card that doesn't require any drivers for any OS and supports hot swap.

I use it with ZFS and a drive config of 3x(3x2TB-Raidz) config.

Hacintosh mobo is an old Intel DX48BT2 with 9 x Welland ME-751J bare-bones drive bays which was my main server some time back.

Not the fastest beast as it only shares 5Gps on ports 0-4 and another 5Gps on ports 5-9 for a total of 10Gps maximum throughput.

Gets the job done though...
