Running over third-party USB3 card?

Postby forquare » Thu Oct 15, 2015 7:22 am

Good afternoon all,

I have used ZFS back on OpenSolaris/OpenIndiana, but haven't touched it for a few years. I have a 2009 Mac Pro running Mavericks with a third-party USB3 card (the driver causes kernel panics under Yosemite), attached is an JBOD. I currently have a mirror created by OS X, but am thinking of investing in a couple more disks and creating a RAIDz.

Is there generally any concerns with doing this over USB? I recall when I was at Sun we were a bit tetchy about doing so, but have things improved?

Many thanks for any comments,
Ben

A significant portion of our users are using USB 2/3 without any particular issues. Performance seems a little variable.

You should be ok starting out with that.

That's great news, thanks for replying, Brendon. I seem to recall issues of silent corruption back when I last considered it, and performance isn't a major issue in a relatively small home setup :)
