zfs volumes can't be added to Time Machine backups

Postby kgreene » Fri Dec 13, 2024 1:44 pm

I wanted to have Time Machine backup my zfs volumes.

When I set up a new Time Machine drive the zfs volumes were listed automatically in the exclude from backup list.

I can't remove them from the exclude list, the - is grayed out and holding option doesn't enable - either.

I seem to remember doing this on my Mac Pro years ago but it's been a while.

note, Mac Studio on Sonoma 14.5

% zfs version
zfs-2.2.2-1
zfs-kmod-2.2.2-1

I suppose this is less a question of the ZFS version you are using but of your macOS version. Apple shifted Time Machine to be based on APFS and its snapshots, and during this process apparently a lot – if not all – non-Apple filesystems can no longer be included into time machine backups nowadays.

Huh OK, any idea if there's a way to force it, maybe reformat as HFS+, etc?

Alternately I could just use something else to do the backups.
