Files not counting as Items on ZFS Datasets

Postby ffk » Wed Apr 12, 2023 7:57 pm

Does anyone know why Files would not count as items on a ZFS dataset?

I copied a folder over to a ZFS dataset that had 8 items in it, 2 folders, 2 images, 2 pdfs and 2 spreadsheets... but for what ever reason, only the Folders are couning as items and the remaining files do not count. If I made a folder and put 100 images in it on the ZFS Dataset it would say No items. But if I copy that same folder to my internal drive it will show as 100 items in the folder.

Is there a pool or dataset property that is enabled and/or should be disabled that may fix this?

I don't see this problem when using "Get Info" in Finder, but I don't see how you got that "Info" column there. Is that Finder or some other file explorer software? I think you're going to need to provide more detail (ZFS version, macOS version, any non-default settings on your pool, etc).

I was using PathFinder in dual browser mode for the screenshot. If I access the dataset from smb share it shows correctly as having 8 items in the TestFolder. It only appears to be locally it is not showing correctly.
Might be a PathFinder compatibility issue. I may try moving the pool to the M1 Studio that I have and see if it behaves the same.

ZFS version is 2.1.6 on macOS 12.6.3.

Here are the settings on the pool.

Same thing happens on the the pool when mounted on M1 MacStudio, macOS 12.6.3, ZFS 2.1.6.
It may very well be a PathFinder bug.

This all started with a spotlight Error: datastore publishing not implemented.

I noticed the error in item reporting while trying to figure out the spotlight problem, which is still an issue. Love/Hate relationship with spotlight. It's great when it works... :|

Idle speculation, because I don't know anything about Path Finder, but the "com.apple.mimic hfs" might be of interest here, if it's expecting to be able to use some file system operations that ZFS doesn't implement.

This is probably what’s happening...

com.apple.mimic on all the datasets are set to hfs. Without that there are several Finder and spotlight issues.
