Kernel Panic Issues after installing 2.0.0 RC5 on Big Sur

Postby dguisinger01 » Sat Nov 14, 2020 3:57 pm

I just downloaded and installed 2.0.0 RC5 (the revised package).

zpool kept telling me the kext wasn't loaded, so I rebooted and got a hard crash during boot.

After booting in safe mode I get the following report:

Can second this, it's consistent, had to remove the kext via safe mode.

Not quite the same symptoms here...

Installed on a Big Sur release in a VM (upgraded from Catalina) on an iMac Pro host. 1.9.4 was previously installed (if that is relevant) and was not removed prior to installation of 2.0.0RC5. VM wedges hard on boot. Safe mode reveals (no keepsyms sorry):

@lundman "invalid opcode"? And I see avx512f in there. Could this related to the optimized assember with the W-class Xeon that we encountered back in July?

Cheers!

Ahh thanks guys - ok, so if your CPU has AVX, it'll try to use it and we die. How frustrating.

I will do a pkg without new assembler versions then.

The AVX assembler can be disabled with kstat - but I suspect it dies before you have a chance to set sysctl values.

Re: Kernel Panic Issues after installing 2.0.0 RC5 on Big Su

Postby Jimbo » Mon Nov 16, 2020 12:00 am

I got a hard lockup on install, no panic...

Trying again.

Edit: Nope it was a panic. Same invalid opcode?

Re: Kernel Panic Issues after installing 2.0.0 RC5 on Big Su

Postby Jimbo » Mon Nov 16, 2020 12:08 am

Second install attempt ran through.

So far so good:
Code: Select all
user@Mac ~ % sudo zpool import
   pool: Empty
     id: 1448954981730503761
  state: ONLINE
status: Some supported features are not enabled on the pool.
action: The pool can be imported using its name or numeric identifier, though
some features will not be available without an explicit 'zpool upgrade'.
 config:

   Empty                                         ONLINE
     media-26BCE658-A385-304C-BE05-63DF2F003A8E  ONLINE
user@Mac ~ % sudo zpool import -a
do_mount calling mount with fstype zfs, rpath /Volumes/Empty, fspec /dev/disk3s1, mflag 0, optptr defaults, noatime, dev, exec,rw,setuid, nomand, zfsutil, optlen 50, devdisk 0, ispool 1
user@Mac ~ % sudo zpool status -v
  pool: Empty
 state: ONLINE
status: Some supported features are not enabled on the pool. The pool can
still be used, but some features are unavailable.
action: Enable all features using 'zpool upgrade'. Once this is done,
the pool may no longer be accessible by software that does not support
the features. See zpool-features(5) for details.
config:

   NAME                                          STATE     READ WRITE CKSUM
   Empty                                         ONLINE       0     0     0
     media-26BCE658-A385-304C-BE05-63DF2F003A8E  ONLINE       0     0     0

errors: No known data errors

A couple of quick observations before I push on with more testing:
  • Mounted existing pool
  • Copied a bunch of files, seemed ok
  • sudo zpool export of my pool resulted in macOS telling me that the drive was not exported properly (telling me to eject before removal)... seems repeatable
  • sudo zfs created a few volumes, seemed ok
  • changing the ownership of the volumes (root:root to user:staff) from the shell resulted in the volume icon changing on the desktop...? Edit: this might be some Big Sur strangeness... changed back when playing with permissions.
  • /bin/bash with full disk access and automount seems to work

Cheers!
James

Edit - some clarifications
