zvol and persistent names

Postby LnxBil » Fri May 29, 2020 5:21 am

Hi everyone,

Happy to use ZFS on OSX, after using it multiple years on FreeBSD and Linux.

Is there a way to get the nice and predictable way of naming zvols like on Linux? Currently I need to use diskutil list and diskutil info to find out the zvol -> disk?? mapping.

Best,

We (are supposed to) create symlinks in /var/run/zfs/ for zvols. Which can be used from POSIX land. However, if you are involving the UI (mounting, using etc), then it really likes /dev/disk* names, so, for example /etc/fstab, it is better to match by UUID rather than the symlinks/devdisk*
