Recommendations for clean install of ZFS

Postby mstan » Thu Oct 25, 2018 9:32 am

I have recently done clean installs of Yosemite and Sierra and need to do a clean install of ZFS; also want to create a new pool, this time a 4 x 4TB raidz pool with 12TB useable. I need recommendations on optimal version for both OS’ and optimal settings for the pool.

My hardware:

Mac Pro 4,1 —> 5,1
32 GB ecc ram
4 x 4TB internal HDDs
3 internal SSDs for mac os’

Thanks.

As for creating the pool, we still recommend using:

sudo zpool create -f -o ashift=12 -O compression=lz4 -O casesensitivity=insensitive -O atime=off -O normalization=formD

Ok. Thanks for confirming that. But what current version is most compatible? I last used 1.52 on both Yosemite and Sierra and it was very stable if not smooth or particularly fast. OTOH, 1.81 crashed Yosemite.

There shouldn't be a problem with 1.8.1, but if there is, we need to know about it :)

I just repeated install of 1.81 on Yosemite with the same hard fault at restart. I used your recovery procedure this time and that worked. So now I do I have the log and will provide it to you.

Here is the crash log from the second attempt to install 1.81. Looks like Carbon Copy Cloner caused the panic. Really?

That is some kind of special access app that gives CCC special elevated privileges to do clones of the OS. Never encountered a problem with CCC before.

That doesn't look like a panic report, just a core dump - so it might be unrelated.

Yeah, I was wondering about. I don’t see anything that is labeled panic report. Where specifically is it in Yosemite?

BTW, I just successfully installed 1.81 in Sierra and it works but for one a problem with Carbon Copy Cloner. It won't back up to the ZFS pool; gives error message "The task failed because there is not a disk image at the location specified for the destination disk." CCC also list the ZFS pool as an "image volume"; pools created under 1.52 didn't have this problem under CCC. I have sent a report to CCC. Do you have any insight into this?
