The disk you inserted was not readable...

Postby mauricev » Mon Jan 15, 2018 7:41 pm

I recently created a zfs pool on an external USB drive. At every bootup, I get a dialog exclaiming "The disk you inserted was not readable..."

Despite this, the pool and its filesystems mount in the Finder and the pool is working fine otherwise.

The pool shows as follows:

Code: Select all
  pool: ext-bkup
 state: ONLINE
status: Some supported features are not enabled on the pool. The pool can
still be used, but some features are unavailable.
action: Enable all features using 'zpool upgrade'. Once this is done,
the pool may no longer be accessible by software that does not support
the features. See zpool-features(5) for details.
  scan: none requested
config:

   NAME                                          STATE     READ WRITE CKSUM
   ext-bkup                                      ONLINE       0     0     0
     media-66AA6995-02B3-4151-AD7D-9131C28B7095  ONLINE       0     0     0

Oddly, according to the OS, the disk is listed thusly:

Code: Select all
/dev/disk6 (external, physical):
   #:                       TYPE NAME                    SIZE       IDENTIFIER
   0:      GUID_partition_scheme                        *6.0 TB     disk6
   1:       Microsoft Basic Data                         6.0 TB     disk6s1

So despite the disk mounting properly, at least some part of the OS is confusing ZFS for "Microsoft Basic Data".

The OS is 10.13.2.

That is a side-effect due to ZFS integration not being entirely complete. We have development branches for all that. You can just ignore the message, or, there are tricks:
https://openzfsonosx.org/wiki/Suppressi ... ing_pop-up

where you just need one of the partitions to be recognised for it to be quiet.

When I look at any of my Thunderbolt-connected drives, I see
Code: Select all
/dev/disk5 (external, physical):
   #:                       TYPE NAME                    SIZE       IDENTIFIER
   0:      GUID_partition_scheme                        *4.0 TB     disk5
   1:                        ZFS ext-hd                  4.0 TB     disk5s1
   2: 6A945A3B-1DD2-11B2-99A6-080020736631               8.4 MB     disk5s9

So just out of curiosity, why would the USB drive be different? Or is it because the USB-connected pool consists of one drive and Thunderbolt-connected one consists of four drives in raidz2 configuration?

Anyway, I went through some hoops in brew to get gdisk installed and manually changed the GUID of the partition label and now it's fixed! ;)
