OSX 10.10.1 - Open Image (.cdr) Changes After 1.6.1

Postby Jimserac » Sun Oct 29, 2017 3:57 pm

On Yosemite(10.10.1) after installing 1.6.1, all works well with ZFS but the behaviour of how OSX handles
.CDR images seems to have changed.

Formerly I would double click on a .cdr and it would mount.

After installing 1.6.1, double clicking on a saved image (extension .CDR) gives error message that it cannot mount this filesystem.
(Note: this worked prior to installing 1.6.1, even after installing 1.5.2, the version that preceeded it).

WORKAROUND:
Go into disk utility. On the left side will be the name of your .CDR (I keep mine on my desktop).
Click on the name and then click on mount.
After a moment it will again tell you that it cannot be mounted.
But a second name of the CDR (the logical volume ?) will appear beneath it on the left right
under the name you formerly clicked on.
Click on that and then click on the "Mount" icon and this time it will work and be mounted
and the icon for the mounted .cdr will appear on your desktop as usual.

I tried to replicate this locally, installing 1.6.1 on 10.12, and converted the .dmg to a .cdr - but it kept mounting fine from double-clicking.

If it were to be an issue with ZFS, the only thing I could imagine it being is the fs.bundle matching, so if you were to rename /Library/Filesystems/zfs.fs out of that directory, and rebooting, does the problem still persist?

WHOOPS !!

In /Library/Filesystems there is no zfs.fs !
all that is there is a folder named NetFSPlugins !!!

And there's nothing in NetFSPlugins (0 items).

Thanks again,
J.

Hmm maybe we added the bundle after 1.6.1 . Then I'm not entirely sure how ZFS could be involved. Have you tried looking at the system logs while you try to double click it?

No. I'm so used to doing thru Disk Utility now that I don't even worry about it.

If I'm not mistaken. The handy dandy feature to make disk images (.cdr) WAS REMOVED
IN El Capitain/Sierra/High Sierra...wasn't it. Or is it still there.

Anyway, on this computer Yosemite is as far as I go, thanks to the delightful
TCPBLOCK and other apps.

Thanks again,
J.

Oh, forgot to mention, the actual error message I get back when it fails to open is something like
"Cannot Open, No Mountable Filesystems".

Again, this started right after the installation of 1.6.1.

Maybe I didn't remove or uninstall 1.5.2 properly or something but, as I mentioned
I'm doing just fine mounting it via disk utility.

Thanks

Hi! I don't want to add confusion, but I have a very similar issue, except that I'm still on 1.5.2 and OS 10.9.5.
Sometimes, all .dmg refuse to mount in the Finder but it works with disk utility, like you do. After a reboot, it's ok.
I never thought of blaming ZFS, but reading you, I wonder if that issue arose after I've tried 1.6.1... (I had to go back to 1.5.2 because of other issues I never solved) I'll try uninstalling, reinstalling and check Console, if it happens again.

All I can tell you is that my problem with mounting the .cdr started soon, almost immediately after
I installed 1.6.1

By the way, all the ZFS stuff from 1.6.1 has been working great for me on Yosemite.

Why did you have to go back to the previous release ?

Here's the whole story: https://openzfsonosx.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=3012
But as I seem to be the only one having that issue, I abandoned and came back to 1.5.2, waiting for the next release to see if it solves it...
As for the mounting issue, I've uninstalled/reinstalled v1.5.2 yesterday, and today even my sparsebundles wouldn't mount in the finder (but ok with disk utility).
Nothing in the Console.
So, on my side, there is no sign that it's related to ZFS, even if I can't guess who might be the culprit... :(

EDIT: when I try to open a .dmg, i've got a message saying "unable to open DiskImageMounter.app"
Forcing DiskImageMounter to quit with Activity Monitor, the dmgs mount again but no way for sparsebundles.
At next reboot, all is working well again.
