edonr on macOS, not on Ubuntu?

Hi all,

Code: Select all
sudo zpool create -f -o ashift=12 -O checksum=edonr -O casesensitivity=insensitive -O atime=off -O normalization=formD $pool $arraytype diskn diskn+1 diskn+2

works a treat on macOS

I decided to "play" with Ubuntu Desktop 17.04.
#modinfo zfs shows version 0.6.5.9.2

but I can't import because ZOL is complaining about not able to support edon-r hash algorithm...

do they know something we don't?

I vaguely recall edon-r having some issue...

Edon-R's efficiency in CPU cycles comes at the
cost of not really being a strong hash function. One demonstration of
this is that it allows detectable patterns in its output depending on
the last few bytes of the input, which is a fatal flaw in the eyes of
cryptographers. This is called a "distinguisher"

but I wasn't aware that they disabled it for ZOL...

The only way I'm going to get around this is if I compile ZFS myself with edon-r enabled, correct?

back to skein for me folks...

Ha...

It's quicker to Hacintosh an old X58 mobo than it is to learn/compile ZFS on linux (enabling edonr)

Looks like my third backup is staying on macOS a bit longer...

(changed checksums back to skein by the way)
