Tracking actual physical disk with /dev/diskxxx identifiers

Postby randolph.kahle » Mon Feb 27, 2017 8:14 am

I am new to ZFS and OpenZFS on OSX.

I have reviewed several videos on ZFS so I understand the fundamentals.

My question is simple - how do I map the physical drives I place into my MacPro computers to the /dev/diskxxx identifiers as shown by OS X? I want to understand this so I can put labels on physical drives, etc. so I know which one to pull if I get a report about a failing HD.

Thanks! -- Randy

we recommend you do not use the /dev/diskXXX names, as OSX has a habit of renumbering them, but rather, use /var/run/disk/ style, for example, by-id. Which will give your answer in the names.
