A pool disappeared - now it's redistributed the devices

Postby fustbariclation » Mon Sep 26, 2016 3:37 am

I created a new, very simple, pool, with three devices in it, and no mirroring.

It disappeared. When I do an 'zpool import', I get this:

Code: Select all
   pool: saturn
     id: 1397925762607537346
  state: UNAVAIL
status: One or more devices were being resilvered.
action: The pool cannot be imported due to damaged devices or data.
 config:

   saturn                                          UNAVAIL  missing device
     mirror-1                                      DEGRADED
       media-F699F1AB-C32C-3648-9592-862139684592  ONLINE
       4886616845787344842                         UNAVAIL  cannot open

   pool: saturn
     id: 5028565504456390449
  state: UNAVAIL
status: One or more devices are missing from the system.
action: The pool cannot be imported. Attach the missing
   devices and try again.
   see: http://zfsonlinux.org/msg/ZFS-8000-6X
 config:

   saturn                                        UNAVAIL  missing device
     media-C2C0D330-493B-2444-8CC1-79EC40EEA9A4  ONLINE
     media-B882EFAF-3D63-E741-AA3D-DBB33E5C7EEA  ONLINE

Additional devices are known to be part of this pool, though their
   exact configuration cannot be determined.

The second pool looks right - but the missing device is in the 1st pool.

How can I move media-F699F1AB-C32C-3648-9592-862139684592 into the pool saturn:5028565504456390449 -- where it belongs?

I've had no replies.

Has anybody else seen something similar?

Does anybody know if erasing and rebuilding is my only option?

Perhaps you can recreate this situation and let us know how you caused it?

Lol! I wish that I knew. :P

I know that I had a pool called 'Saturn'. I deleted it.

I then created a new pool called 'Saturn'. It worked fine for a while.

Then, as you know, about ten days ago, it disappeared. Now, I can see, it has taken one of the three drives and seems to have attached it to the old, deleted pool.

I'd like to just copy the data off the drives and recreate it all - I think I'd call it something else this time, zfs seems to remember names, long after they're supposed to be gone.

I can't find anything telling me how to recover anything from these drives. I'd hoped it would be easy, as I didn't mirror or stripe them.

Hi,

I don't think you're going to be getting your data back somehow. Please remember that storing data on ZFS is not equivalent to having backups, loss of data through operator, hardware, or software failures is always a possibility.

Your description if what you did is insufficient to form much of an opinion as to what has happened. You said that you didn't mirror or stripe the disks - yet you created a pool from multiple devices? What topology did you create, do you remember the zpool create command you used? - from what I can see saturn#2 in your output is a stripe? The first is a mirror.

It would be handy to understand at least a little of what happened - if you do recreate the dataset from scratch, it would be best if its not lost again!

What hardware is involved in this? Around the time of the disappearance - what happened? Did you reconfigure anything? Move drives around? Change enclosures? etc?
