I've been getting help from a good Samaritan. I removed the bad drive and put the pool into a read-only state so that I could copy off data (I have a cloud back-up, too, but restores are slow). So tonight I'll add in a fresh drive and will see how the re-silvering goes.

I'm assuming that it was the hard drive because the re-silvering proceeded normally once I swapped it out for a new drive. I'll put the old drive in an external enclosure to run some tests before requesting a RMA.
