when migrating from ZEVO, another take

Issues specific to non-OpenZFS pools (i.e., ZEVO & MacZFS).

when migrating from ZEVO, another take

Postby Marco » Tue Mar 25, 2014 3:47 am

I was a user of Zevo on OS X from OS 10.6.8 to 10.8.5.
When I decided to move to Mavericks, I copied everything I wanted to preserve on my Zevo pool to an HFS+ disk.
Then I followed the procedure outlined above: I disconnected my Zevo pool, I unistalled Zevo, I upgraded to Mavericks and then I installed OpenZFSonOSX.
Then I tried to reconnect my Zevo pool.
It was as if I hadn't connected it at all. I couldn't import it with:
Code: Select all
sudo zpool import

I didn't show if I tired to list it.
It didn't even show if I ran
Code: Select all
sudo diskutil list

This was very strange to me, so I went to see if anything was left from Zevo on my disk.
It turns out that probably there were two empty leftovers. Just the file, with no content.
I think they showed up in the Console:
Code: Select all
24/03/14 19:50:10,598 com.apple.kextcache[708]: Can't open CFBundle for /Library/Extensions/ZFSDriver.kext.
24/03/14 19:50:10,599 com.apple.kextcache[708]: Can't open CFBundle for /Library/Extensions/ZFSFilesystem.kext.

I understand that these files are not installed by OpenZFSonOSX.
If I am not mistaken, the files that should be installed by OpenZFSonOSX are
Code: Select all
spl.kext
,
Code: Select all
zfs.kext
, and then the folder
Code: Select all
/OpenZFSonOSX/ZFSCommandLineTools
.
It seems that on Mavericks they should into
Code: Select all
/Library/Extensions/
and not into
Code: Select all
System/Library/Extensions/

Is that is right, then the files
Code: Select all
ZFSDriver.kext
and
Code: Select all
ZFSFilesystem.kext
would be confirmed as being leftovers from ZEVO and I should remove then.
I also noticed that they were installed in March 2012. So they couldn't possibly be part of OpenZFSonOSX.

I felt sure enough to manually remove them and reboot.

To my surprise, nothing changed.
The pool is neither imported nor listed by zpool or zfs, and the disk not even seen by diskutil.

Any idea about what I am missing?

Thanks in advance
Marco

If you still have the ZEVO preference pane, you can just run the uninstaller it provides.

Are you now seeing the physical disks when you do "diskutil list"?

Sorry, I made a silly mistake: I plugged the wrong cable, and the HD was not powered. This is why diskutil didn't se it.

Now zpool sees the disk, and I am in the process of learning how to mount the pool.

All right, I could mount my pool.

Kudos to Lundman and to ilovezfs for all you work!
