Is it necessary to reformat a hard drive which is formatted as HFS+ Journaled (standard Mac format) containing data before adding it to a ZFS pool?

No, just unmount it with diskutil, and then create pool on it with "-f". Make sure you get the right disk.

OK good. Thanks. The disk I have in mind will be part of a two-way mirror. The other disk is a new unused one and I was concerned that I might have to "wipe" it first.
